Firebreaks continued

The Open Space District allows cutting or mowing of grass. A permit is not needed. However, if in creating defensible space for your property you are considering the removal of woody vegetation (i.e., brush or trees) you must obtain a fuel reduction permit from the District. Call the filed office at 415 507-2816. Mow or weed-wack early in the morning when temperatures are cooler and there is less risk of starting a fire.

The 1963 Senate Bill 643 requires a "defensible space" and applies to anyone that has a "...building or structure in or adjoining a mountainous area or forest covered lands, grass covered lands or any land which is covered by flammable material." In 1992 fines and penalties were established.

State Public Resources Code also requires that property owners:
• remove any portion of a tree extending within 10 feet of chimney outlets;
• remove deadwood on trees adjacent to or overhanging structures;
• remove leaves or other dead material from roofs;
• provide screens on chimney outlets.
